Investigation into Sebastián Marset arrest in Bolivia

Overview

Authorities in Bolivia have reopened an investigation into irregularities following the March 2026 operation to capture Uruguayan drug trafficker Sebastián Marset in Santa Cruz. The probe focuses on the suspected disappearance of valuables, including money and luxury watches, that were allegedly not turned over to the Prosecutor’s Office.

Recent developments have expanded the scope of the investigation to include several high-ranking officers. Captain Guillermo Ruiz Guzmán has been ordered into six months of preventive detention in Viacha, facing charges of embezzlement, breach of duty, theft, extortion, and passive bribery. This follows the preventive detention of former national intelligence director Colonel Juan Marcelo Ferrufino Rojas.

Arrest warrants and migration alerts have been issued for former National Intelligence Director Óscar Fernando Moreno and Lieutenant Colonel Erick Correa, both of whom are currently in hiding. While a search of a police facility in La Paz—a gym used as a warehouse by the Special Tactical Actions Group (GEAT)—resulted in the discovery of four suitcases, prosecutors reported they were found empty.

In a related development, criminal associates are under scrutiny. Engri Junior de Almeida Maia, a Brazilian national known as the ‘Pablo Escobar de Goiás,’ was captured following an armed confrontation in Santa Cruz. He is accused of leading the ‘Amigos del Estado’ organization, which reportedly provided logistical support and security for Marset’s criminal network.
