Second West Nile Virus case confirmed in Extremadura, Spain

The Servicio Extremeño de Salud (SES) has confirmed a second case of West Nile virus in Extremadura in 2026. A 67‑year‑old woman from Valdetorres is being treated at the Hospital de Mérida. The first case this year involved an 86‑year‑old woman from the Don Benito‑Villanueva de la Serena health area, who has since been discharged.

In 2025 the region recorded 39 West Nile cases and five deaths. SES has alerted the eight health areas of Extremadura to maintain heightened surveillance for compatible symptoms and has reinforced its 2026 Vector Surveillance Plan, which includes expanded entomological monitoring. The agency also issued public guidance on eliminating standing water, using protective clothing, repellents, and installing window screens to reduce mosquito exposure.
