Section Control speed system on Luegbrücke of Brenner Autobahn penalises speeding

A Section Control system was installed on the Luegbrücke of the Brenner Autobahn (A13) to enforce a 60 km/h speed limit. Unlike traditional speed cameras, the system records vehicle licence plates at the entry and exit of the monitored stretch and calculates the average speed between the two points. Drivers exceeding the allowed time are subject to fines.

The measure, introduced in January 2026 by the Austrian highway operator ASFINAG, aims to improve safety and traffic flow on the bridge, which is currently operating as a single lane in each direction due to ongoing reconstruction work that began in early 2025 and is scheduled to finish in 2030. The bridge connects Austria’s Tyrol region with Italy, making the enforcement relevant for cross‑border traffic.
