Section control system installed on Brenner motorway Lueg Bridge
A new section control speed enforcement system has been implemented on the Lueg Bridge in Tyrol, part of the A13 Brenner motorway connecting Austria and Italy. The system calculates average speed between two measurement points rather than measuring speed at a single spot, making it effective for construction zones where accidents are frequent.
The bridge is currently undergoing major renovation work that began in early 2025. These repairs are being conducted in three phases, with the final phase expected to be completed by 2030. Due to the construction, the motorway is currently limited to a single lane in both directions.
A speed limit of 60 km/h is in effect on the Lueg Bridge regardless of whether the road is single or double-lane. The section control system works by recording license plates and timestamps as vehicles enter and exit the controlled zone; if the time elapsed between the two points indicates a speed exceeding the limit, a fine is issued.
