Security concerns rise in Gela and Cerignola following school crimes

Recent criminal incidents in Gela and Cerignola have raised concerns regarding public security and the protection of sensitive institutions.

In Gela, local official Diego Iaglietti has called for urgent institutional intervention following a series of crimes, including an arson attack at the Luigi Capuana school, an assault on an elderly woman, and thefts at a hospital and mortuary. Iaglietti urged authorities to increase territorial control, enhance video surveillance, and ensure adequate resources for law enforcement to restore public confidence in legality.

In Cerignola, two individuals were arrested after breaking into the Giuseppe Pavoncelli institute to loot vending machines. During the incident, the suspects assaulted a carabiniere and a police officer. Vincenzo Raffaeli, 35, engaged in a physical struggle with a military officer, while 25-year-old Luigi Cortese used a piece of iron to attack a police officer. Authorities recovered stolen items, including tools and electronics, and seized a machete found at the scene. Both suspects face charges including aggravated robbery, resistance, and injury to public officials.
