Overview

Public security concerns have intensified in Italian municipalities following a series of criminal incidents targeting schools and public institutions.

In Gela, an arson attack at the Luigi Capuana school complex caused significant damage to several rooms on the eve of the new school year. School director Giovanni Bevilacqua described the act as an assault on a “place of growth, education, and the future.” This incident, alongside thefts at a hospital and a mortuary, led local official Diego Iaglietti to call for increased territorial control, enhanced video surveillance, and more resources for law enforcement.

In Cerignola, security was also compromised when two individuals broke into the Giuseppe Pavoncelli institute to loot vending machines. During the robbery, the suspects assaulted a carabiniere and a police officer. Authorities seized a machete and various stolen electronics at the scene, and both suspects face charges including aggravated robbery and injury to public officials.
