Mérida approves 2050 urban plan amid PAN political rift

In Mérida, Yucatán, the Municipal Council has unanimously approved the new Municipal Territorial Ordering and Urban Development Program (PMOTDU). This long-term strategic plan, which guides growth through 2050, aims to ensure orderly urban expansion, reduce environmental risks, and improve road efficiency. Proposed by Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada, the program was developed through collaboration with citizens, universities, and business chambers, dividing the territory into 14 zones to protect cultural heritage and natural areas.

Simultaneously, political tensions have escalated within the National Action Party (PAN) in Yucatán. Former Mérida Mayor Renán Barrera Concha announced his resignation from the party's National Executive Committee (CEN), though he stated he will remain a member. Barrera criticized the national leadership under Jorge Romero for allegedly yielding to “vile interests” and rewarding “traitors.” He also expressed dissatisfaction with local leaders, including former Governor Mauricio Vila and Mayor Cecilia Patrón, regarding the selection of candidates for upcoming elections. This rift is viewed by some analysts as a reflection of a broader national crisis within the PAN as the party debates its future electoral alliances.
