Security experts warn of disinformation and crime risks during solar eclipse

Authorities and security experts are preparing for potential risks associated with the total solar eclipse on August 12. While the astronomical event is expected to draw significant tourism, it has prompted the government to deploy a special security plan to address threats such as terrorism, violent radicalization, serious crime, and cybersecurity issues.

Cybersecurity expert Selva Orejón warns that the primary threat is not necessarily attacks on critical infrastructure, but rather psychological warfare through disinformation. The surge in information searches during such events creates opportunities for fake websites and the spread of misinformation via social media and AI applications.

Additionally, security analysts note that the mass concentration of people in public spaces and the sudden changes in light levels can create tactical opportunities for criminal activity. While there is no scientific link between celestial alignments and human behavior, the combination of large crowds, disorientation, and collective suggestion can increase vulnerability to theft and other crimes.
