Security forces increase presence in Lanao del Norte ahead of BARMM elections

Security forces in the Philippines have increased presence in Lanao del Norte to prepare for the Bangsamoro parliamentary elections scheduled for September 14, 2026. The military and police are conducting joint law enforcement operations, including random checkpoints and shows of force, to maintain public safety and implement the election gun ban.

On September 2, authorities intercepted a convoy of 23 motor vehicles and five motorcycles belonging to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte. The convoy, which included armed members of the MILF 131st Brigade, was traveling toward Munai for a monthly meeting.

Police Colonel Leo De Leon Sua stated that the convoy was flagged down because the group could not present documentation proving proper coordination with authorities for their movement. Following verification procedures, security personnel escorted the MILF members back to Picong, Lanao del Sur. Officials emphasized that the operation was a standard security verification rather than an action against the MILF's political activities.
