Mexico security strategy yields major drug lab and official arrests
Mexico's National Security Strategy has yielded significant results in the fight against organized crime and drug production. According to Omar García Harfuch, between October 2024 and August 2026, authorities detained 67,253 individuals for high-impact crimes and seized 34,353 firearms. The crackdown on corruption has also led to the arrest of 111 public officials for links to criminal organizations.
In the combat against synthetic drugs, the Mexican Army and Navy have dismantled 2,771 clandestine laboratories across 24 states. A major success occurred in Parral, Chihuahua, where the Plataforma Centinela intelligence system enabled the detection of a narcolaboratory. This facility had an estimated capacity to produce up to 100 kilograms of methamphetamine daily. The operation was a joint effort between the SSPE and SEDENA.
In Puebla, the 'Operativo Enjambre' targeted criminal networks operating in the Mexico-Puebla-Veracruz corridor. This operation resulted in the detention of several municipal presidents, including the mayors of Esperanza and Tepeyahualco, who are suspected of involvement in cargo theft, extortion, and kidnapping. Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier has expressed support for these federal actions, emphasizing a policy of zero tolerance for officials colluding with criminal groups.
