Colombia: Council of State admits lawsuit to annul De la Espriella election
Colombia's Council of State has admitted a lawsuit seeking to annul the election of President Abelardo de la Espriella and Vice President José Manuel Restrepo. The legal challenge, filed by Luis Guillermo Pérez Casas, alleges that the campaign employed psychological violence against political and social opponents. Specific expressions used during the campaign, such as “destripar” (disembowel) and “dar de baja” (take down), are cited as evidence of intimidation. While the Council of State noted that psychological violence is a valid ground for electoral annulment, it rejected a request to provisionally suspend the officials, stating that evidence must first prove these actions actually influenced voter will and the final election results.
Separately, President De la Espriella has called for a joint operation involving the military, police, and Ecopetrol to combat massive fuel theft. Reports indicate that approximately 123,700 barrels of refined products are being stolen monthly from a 14-inch pipeline connecting Santa Marta to the interior. The President warned that these losses, which could exceed 1.5 million barrels annually, are linked to organized crime and the illicit processing of cocaine.
Additionally, the administration is facing scrutiny regarding potential appointments at Ecopetrol, with experts calling for technical and ethical merit in the selection of the company's next president.
