Sedentary behavior and the benefits of daily movement
Prolonged sitting, even when not performing intense exercise, can lead to physical discomfort and negative health impacts. While sitting may seem like rest, the body performs constant static work to maintain posture, which can cause muscle tension, stiffness, and pain in the neck, shoulders, and back.
To mitigate these effects, experts suggest breaking up long periods of inactivity with movement. Everyday household chores—such as vacuuming, washing dishes, carrying laundry, or gardening—serve as beneficial forms of movement. Activities like vacuuming involve walking, bending, and moving the arms and torso, which can increase heart rate and breathing frequency.
Rather than seeking more intense pressure or massage to relieve tension, the body often benefits simply from changing positions and moving to prevent muscles from performing the same repetitive task for extended periods.
