Health impacts of sedentary lifestyles
Overview
Research continues to highlight the severe health risks associated with sedentary behavior. Studies indicate that prolonged sitting is linked to increased cancer mortality, specifically regarding obesity-related and type-2 diabetes-linked cancers of the liver, kidney, pancreas, colon, breast, and thyroid. Notably, research suggests that just 30 minutes of uninterrupted sitting can contribute to a nearly 10% increase in the risk of dying from cancer. Beyond cancer, a study published in Nature Communications—utilizing data from the All of Us Research Program and Fitbit devices—analyzed over 13 million days of behavior. The findings link prolonged sitting to increased risks of obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, sleep apnea, and depression.
Medical specialists also warn of localized complications. Gastroenterology Surgery Specialist Dr. Salih Can Çelik notes that excessive time spent sitting on the toilet can increase vascular pressure in the anal and rectal regions, leading to hemorrhoids. To mitigate risks, experts suggest increasing daily step counts and maintaining digital ergonomics to prevent back pain.
Recent warnings also highlight rising rates of digital eye strain. During the 70th Brazilian Congress of Ophthalmology, ophthalmologist Ana Paula Silverio explained that excessive use of smartphones and tablets among children and adolescents is leading to an increase in dry eye syndrome. This occurs because prolonged screen time reduces the involuntary frequency of blinking, causing tears to evaporate more quickly and resulting in inadequate lubrication. Symptoms include a ‘gritty sensation’, burning, itching, redness, and blurred vision. The risk is particularly high for adolescents using small screens in poorly lit environments.
