SEGA cancels ambitious ‘Super Game’ project due to high risks
SEGA has officially terminated its ambitious ‘Super Game’ project, a long-term initiative originally announced in 2021 aimed at creating a global 3A-grade online title. The company had allocated approximately $882 million toward the project, which was intended to launch in March 2026.
SEGA President and COO Shuhei Uchida explained that the decision was driven by the escalating risks associated with the scale of the project. As the initiative evolved, the required investment and operational resources grew disproportionately, making the potential return on investment difficult to justify amidst a changing global economic and gaming market.
While the flagship project has been cancelled, SEGA is not abandoning the ‘Games as a Service’ (GaaS) model. The company is reallocating approximately 100 developers from the project to focus on reviving classic IPs, including titles such as Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, and Virtua Fighter. SEGA continues to operate existing service-based titles and is developing new GaaS projects, such as Total War: Warhammer 40,000.
