SEGA cancellation of Super Game initiative

Overview

SEGA has officially terminated its ‘Super Game’ initiative, a long-term project first announced in 2021. The initiative aimed to develop AAA global hits using a ‘Games as a Service’ (GaaS) model, with projected investments reaching nearly $1 billion.

Company leadership, including President and COO Shuji Utsumi and Shuhei Uchida, cited high financial and operational risks as the primary reasons for the cancellation. The scale of investment required to compete in the global market became difficult to justify given the changing economic landscape.

While the specific flagship project is cancelled, SEGA intends to maintain its presence in the live-service sector. The company is reallocating approximately 100 developers from the initiative to focus on reviving classic intellectual properties, such as ‘Crazy Taxi’, ‘Golden Axe’, ‘Jet Set Radio’, and ‘Virtua Fighter’. SEGA will continue to support existing service-based titles and develop new GaaS projects, including ‘Total War: Warhammer 40,000’.
