SEGA cancels Super Game initiative due to high financial risk

SEGA President and COO Shuji Utsumi has provided details regarding the cancellation of the company’s ‘Super Game’ initiative, which was originally announced in 2021. The project aimed to develop AAA global hits through a Games as a Service (GaaS) model, with a potential investment of nearly $1 billion.

Utsumi stated in an interview with Nikkei that the company decided to halt the initiative because the scale of investment and operations required to match the demands of such services was deemed too risky given the current global situation. While the company recognized the immense potential rewards of successfully launching a large-scale global IP from scratch, the challenges involved in scaling the business were significant.

Despite the cancellation of the specific Super Game project, SEGA intends to continue pursuing opportunities within the live-service market. The company remains active in this sector with titles such as Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, Sega Football Club Champions 2026, and the upcoming Total War: Warhammer 40,000, which is expected to feature continuous world expansion.
