Xbox launches Disc-to-Digital program for all users
Microsoft has officially rolled out its Disc-to-Digital licensing program to all Xbox One and Xbox Series X users following a successful testing period with the Xbox Insider Program. The feature allows players to convert eligible physical game discs into digital licenses tied to their Microsoft accounts, enabling them to play games without needing to keep the disc inserted in the console.
Users can claim these licenses by inserting a supported disc into a console with a disc drive and launching the game. Some updates have even enabled automatic license claiming upon the first launch. The program supports features such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming for compatible titles.
While the program covers a vast number of games—with community lists tracking over 1,500 to 1,800 compatible titles—not all discs are eligible. Availability depends on technical factors, manufacturing dates, and publisher permissions. Major publishers like Ubisoft and SEGA have joined the program, though others like Square Enix and Bandai Namco have not yet added support.
Crucially, the digital license remains tied to the physical disc. If a user sells or trades the disc, the digital license is revoked from the original owner and can be claimed by the new owner, preserving the disc's tradable value.
