Seibu Shibuya Store closes after 58 years of operation
The Seibu Shibuya Store in Tokyo has officially closed its doors after 58 years of operation, marking the end of an era for the Shibuya district. Originally opened in 1968 under the Saison Group, the department store served as a major cultural hub and trendsetter for youth fashion and lifestyle. The closure follows years of deficit management since 2016 and was driven by the inability to reach new lease agreements with landowners amidst the ongoing redevelopment of the Shibuya area.
The closure of the Seibu Shibuya Store is part of a broader trend of retail shifts across Japan. While the department store's A and B buildings are closing, other sections of the complex, such as the Movida and Loft buildings, will continue to operate under different branding.
Simultaneously, various local businesses across other regions are also facing closures. In Kobe, the ramen shop Jikaseimen Niku Style Hayashi closed on September 30. In Yokkaichi, Yakitori no Ojiya closed after 30 years of service. In Kawagoe, Family Salon Aqua Minami-Otsuka also ceased operations, reflecting a general decline in traditional barbershops. In Kumagaya, the fish specialty store Yoshikawa Suisan closed its branch at Az Kumagaya, and in Shiga Prefecture, local bookstores like Hon no Gankodo are struggling to remain viable in the digital age.
