Seibu Shibuya department store closure
Overview
The Seibu Shibuya department store in Tokyo officially closed its doors at the end of September 2026, concluding 58 years of operation. Since its opening in 1968, the store served as a major cultural and fashion landmark in the Shibuya district, acting as a critical incubator for prominent Japanese designers including Kenzo Takada, Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, and Rei Kawakubo.
Sogo & Seibu attributed the closure to a failure to reach a lease agreement with the owners of the land and buildings amid local redevelopment efforts. The store had faced continuous deficits since 2016 due to increased competition from large-scale commercial facilities in the area.
While the Seibu Shibuya A and B buildings have closed, other sections of the complex, such as the Movida and Loft buildings, are expected to continue operating under different branding. Following the closure, Seibu Ikebukuro remains the only Sogo & Seibu department store operating in Tokyo. The company previously stated that employees would be maintained through internal transfers.
