Seibu Shibuya department store to close after 58 years

The Seibu Shibuya department store in Tokyo is scheduled to close at the end of September, marking the conclusion of a 58-year history that began in 1968. The facility served as a major cultural and fashion landmark in the Shibuya district, playing a pivotal role in establishing the area as a center for youth culture and avant-garde style.

Throughout its operation, the store acted as a critical incubator for Japanese designers. Its signature “Capsule” shop was renowned for discovering and promoting emerging talent, providing a platform for creators before they achieved international fame. Prominent designers such as Kenzo Takada, Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, and Rei Kawakubo are noted for their historical connections to the venue.

Former Sogo & Seibu director Mari Tsutsumi reflected on the store’s unique operational style, particularly within the “Seed” building. During the 1980s, the store utilized a “floor master” system that granted significant autonomy to staff, allowing them to manage everything from inventory and music selection to floor design, similar to running an independent select shop. This environment fostered a highly creative and competitive atmosphere that helped shape the evolution of Japanese retail and fashion trends.
