Seismic activity warnings issued for Western Anatolia after Crete earthquake

Following a 4.4 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Crete, Professor Osman Bektaş has issued warnings regarding seismic activity in Western Anatolia. Bektaş highlighted a pattern of movement along the Eşme–Pamukkale–Denizli line, noting that seismic activity continues in that corridor.

Bektaş described the situation involving the Uşak Fault Block as an “earthquake tumor,” pointing out that between the 1970 Gediz earthquake and 2026, six major earthquakes with magnitudes between 6 and 7 have clustered along different edges of the block. He suggested that deformation from the transfer zones between the Crete Thrust Belt and Western Anatolia may be shifting toward the Uşak, Denizli, and Afyon regions.

Rather than focusing on individual tremors, Bektaş emphasized the importance of monitoring the distribution of seismicity across time and space, specifically noting the redistribution of activity from the Simav Fault southward toward Denizli.
