Seismic risk threatens 82% of population in Lima and Callao
A high level of seismic vulnerability has been identified in Lima and Callao, Peru, where at least 82% of the population is exposed to earthquake risks. Reports from Cenepred and Indeci indicate that structural weaknesses, largely driven by self-construction and the improper use of 'pandereta' bricks in load-bearing walls, leave many buildings at risk of collapse.
In the event of a magnitude 8.8 earthquake off the coast of Lima, official estimates project catastrophic consequences, including over 110,000 deaths, nearly 1.1 million injuries, and more than 2 million people left homeless or in extreme vulnerability. Approximately 1 million homes are classified as being at very high risk of total collapse or severe damage.
To mitigate these risks, medical experts emphasize the importance of corporate preparedness. Dr. Omar Plaza of SANNA División Ambulatoria highlights that immediate medical response is critical, noting that survival rates for cardiac arrest drop significantly with every minute of delay. Recommendations for organizations include maintaining operational first aid kits, conducting continuous CPR training, implementing Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), and establishing clear emergency communication protocols.
