Seismic swarm off Calabria coast registers multiple minor tremors

A series of low‑magnitude earthquakes struck the offshore area north‑east of Sicily near Milazzo on Thursday, 9 July 2026. The first tremor, recorded at 16:56, had a magnitude of 1.1 at a depth of 10 km, followed by events of magnitudes 1.8, 1.3, 1.9 and 1.6 between 16:59 and 18:42, with depths ranging from about 6 to 11 km. The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported that the quakes were too weak to cause damage or be felt by the public. Authorities continue to monitor the swarm to better understand its dynamics.

No injuries or property damage have been reported, and the seismic activity remains confined to the typical depth range for the region. The monitoring efforts are ongoing as experts assess any potential risks.
