Seismologists assess earthquake risks in Marmara and Pamukkale regions
Experts are providing updated assessments regarding seismic risks in Turkey, focusing on fault behavior rather than specific dates. Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş noted that modern science focuses on the physical characteristics of faults, such as how much of a fault is locked and where slow, earthquake-free sliding (creep) occurs. Regarding the Marmara region, Bektaş emphasized that while certain sections may slide without causing tremors, other locked segments could potentially produce earthquakes with a magnitude of 6 or higher.
Separately, Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy has issued a warning regarding the Pamukkale Fault near Denizli. He stated that this fault has the potential to produce an earthquake with a magnitude between 6.5 and 7, affecting areas such as Buldan, Karahayıt, and Pamukkale. This follows recent seismic activity in Şanlıurfa, which has renewed discussions regarding the Bozova Fault near the Atatürk Dam.
