Seismologists warn of magnitude 7 earthquake potential in Turkey
Following a 5.4 magnitude earthquake in the Karaköprü district of Şanlıurfa on September 24, seismologists have issued warnings regarding potential future seismic activity in different fault lines across Turkey.
Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir, Director of the Dokuz Eylül University Earthquake Research and Application Center, highlighted the Bozova Fault. He noted that the fault is approximately 55 kilometers long and has the potential to produce an earthquake of up to magnitude 7, noting that the fault has been quiet for a long period.
Separately, seismologist Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy identified risks along the Buldan, Karahayıt, Pamukkale, and Denizli line. He stated that the Pamukkale Fault possesses the capacity to generate earthquakes ranging from magnitude 6.5 to 7 due to accumulated stress and its geological structure.
