Sejingkat Bridge opens to ease Kuching-Samarahan traffic
The 1.281-kilometre Sejingkat Bridge has officially opened to the public, providing a vital new crossing over the Sarawak River. The project, completed ahead of schedule at a cost of RM365.74 million, serves as a major infrastructural milestone for the Kuching and Kota Samarahan regions.
As part of the Sarawak Government’s initiative to develop 21 mega-bridges, the Sejingkat Bridge is the twelfth structure to be completed. It features Malaysia’s first diamond-shaped pylon design. The bridge is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion on the Kuching-Samarahan Highway by providing an alternative route.
Operational benefits include reducing the travel distance between Kota Samarahan and Demak Laut from 29 kilometres to 16.5 kilometres. Long-term connectivity improvements are expected once the DC3 road package is finished by the end of next year, which could eventually reduce the travel distance from Kuching to Sibu from 496 kilometres to approximately 240 kilometres via Sebuyau and Sri Aman.
