Semaglutide and tirzepatide linked to unexpected health benefits

New research suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy), may be linked to a reduced risk of psychiatric hospitalization for individuals living with bipolar disorder. The study, led by Griffith University and published in Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, highlights the potential mental health benefits of these medications, which are primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity.

In a separate US-based multicenter retrospective cohort study involving over 16,000 adults, researchers compared the effects of tirzepatide and semaglutide on asthma exacerbations in patients with both asthma and type 2 diabetes. The study, published in the Journal of Asthma and Allergy, found that the difference in risk for asthma exacerbations between the two incretin therapies was smaller than researchers had initially expected.
