Expanded therapeutic research on metformin and semaglutide

Overview

Recent medical research has identified expanded therapeutic potential for diabetes and obesity medications, specifically metformin and semaglutide, regarding brain health, organ function, and aging. Studies from Baylor College of Medicine suggest metformin may regulate blood sugar by acting directly on the brain. Clinical research into semaglutide has increasingly highlighted anti-aging and protective benefits. A trial at the University of California, San Diego, showed semaglutide slowed molecular markers of aging, while data presented at the European Society of Cardiology congress suggests these GLP-1 receptor agonists may reduce risks for heart attacks, Alzheimer’s, and cancer. Professor Harlan Krumholz of the Yale School of Medicine noted the medications appear to have “far-reaching effects.”

Regarding organ health, a meta-analysis in Medicine found semaglutide more than doubled the likelihood of resolving metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Observational data presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress suggests semaglutide is associated with a nearly 40 per cent reduction in asthma attacks and a 20 per cent reduction in COPD flare-ups. Researchers from Imperial College London utilized UK electronic medical records to find significant improvements in airway disease outcomes compared to sulfonylureas.

Newer findings also suggest psychiatric and addiction-related benefits, including a 22% reduction in the risk of psychiatric hospitalization for those with bipolar disorder. While an experimental study in the American Journal of Psychiatry found semaglutide did not reduce overall alcohol cravings, it significantly decreased heavy drinking days. Clinicians and patients have also noted a decreased desire for nicotine and other substances. In Brazil, Anvisa has approved generic liraglutide to increase competition and lower costs. However, medical professionals warn that rapid weight loss can lead to side effects such as muscle mass loss and skin sagging.

Claims

What the coverage asserts, and how many sources carry each claim.

Coverage disagrees

Sources make claims that cannot both be true. CLSTR reports the disagreement; it does not decide who is right.

  • "Semaglutide significantly reduced the number of heavy drinking days and drinks consumed on drinking days in individuals with alcohol use disorder." www.psypost.org

    vs

"Semaglutide did not reduce primary laboratory measures of alcohol craving or total drinks per day in individuals with alcohol use disorder." www.psypost.org

The first claim asserts semaglutide significantly reduced drinks consumed on drinking days, while the second claims it did not reduce total drinks per day.
