Semaglutide benefits extend beyond weight loss to heart and kidney health

Semaglutide, marketed under brand names such as Ozempic and Wegovy, offers health benefits that extend beyond weight management and type 2 diabetes control. According to Mike Doustdar, CEO of Novo Nordisk, the medication can provide protection for the heart, kidneys, and liver.

Clinical evidence, such as the Select study, indicates that patients may experience a reduction in serious cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes, even with modest weight loss of less than 5%. The medication works as a GLP-1 receptor agonist, mimicking a natural hormone to regulate insulin release, inhibit glucagon, and slow gastric emptying.

Medical experts emphasize that while managing blood sugar is a primary function, the physiological benefits of the molecule are multifaceted. However, excessive sugar consumption while using the medication can counteract its intended effects and potentially lead to side effects like nausea and digestive issues.
