Semaglutide shows psychiatric benefits and increased generic availability

New research and regulatory developments regarding semaglutide are highlighting its potential benefits and increased accessibility. A large Swedish study published in Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica suggests a link between semaglutide use and a reduction in psychiatric hospital admissions for individuals with bipolar disorder. The study, led by Professor Mark Taylor, analyzed 15 years of nationwide data involving nearly 15,000 people.

In Canada, the availability of generic semaglutide is expected to improve treatment affordability for approximately 2.1 million Canadians living with Type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk. Following approvals from Health Canada, generic versions are now available through Quebec’s public drug plan at an annual cost of approximately $1,060. Researchers at McGill University suggest that as prices decrease through increased market competition, combination therapies involving GLP-1 receptor agonists may become highly cost-effective compared to standard treatments.
