Semarang street vendors face relocation ahead of National MTQ

Street vendors (PKL) in the Simpang Lima area of Semarang are facing relocation or temporary closures ahead of the XXXI National Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran (MTQ), scheduled for September 11–20, 2026.

Aniceto Magno Da Silva, head of the Semarang City Trade Office, stated that closing the vendor areas near Lapangan Pancasila is a safety measure. He noted that ongoing construction and electrical work in the area pose risks to both vendors and visitors. The city aims to protect the public while preparing the site for the national event.

However, the Simpang Lima Street Vendor Association has expressed concerns regarding their livelihoods. Association leader Kepareng Wareng noted that many vendors rely on daily income and requested a “win-win solution,” such as relocation to nearby areas like the front of Matahari or the outer ring road, rather than a total month-long suspension of business. The association indicated they are willing to consider relocation if the new sites allow for continued trading.
