31st National MTQ preparations and commencement in Semarang
Overview
Preparations for the 31st National Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an (MTQ) in Semarang, Central Java, have transitioned into the active event phase. Scheduled from September 11 to 20, 2026, the competition brings together approximately 7,000 participants and officials from 37 to 38 provinces.
As the event commenced, Semarang Mayor Agustina Wilujeng Pramestuti confirmed venue readiness, including the Pancasila Simpang Lima field. A parade scheduled for September 12 was designed to showcase diversity and tolerance, with President Prabowo Subianto expected to officially open the proceedings. Regional delegations have finalized their preparations; for instance, Riau announced performance bonuses of up to Rp200 million for first-place winners, while Banten provided 19 national judges.
Authorities have prepared 13 venues, including the Great Mosque of Central Java, supported by integrated transportation, health services, and accommodation. To ensure public accessibility, Governor Ahmad Luthfi and Vice Governor Taj Yasin Maimoen arranged for videotron screens in various locations so citizens could view the opening ceremony.
The event is expected to provide a significant economic boost, with hotel occupancy in Semarang projected to reach 90 percent. A concurrent job fair has also been organized. Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar emphasized that the competition should serve as momentum for the “living Qur’an,” encouraging participants to embody Quranic values in daily life. This year’s event also features increased inclusivity, providing dedicated space for people with disabilities to participate.
