Senamhi issues red alert for heavy rainfall in northern Peru

The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru (Senamhi) has issued red alert 445, warning of intense rainfall in the northern coast and highlands through November 1. Meteorologist Javier Chiong stated that sea temperatures reaching 26 degrees Celsius off the coast of Piura are driving precipitation levels significantly higher than seasonal norms.

In the northern coast, daily rainfall is expected to exceed 22 millimeters, while the northern highlands may see daily accumulations between 18 and 22 millimeters. Some areas have already experienced extreme weather, with Canchaque in the Piura highlands recording 154.9 millimeters of rain on October 29. Other significant rainfall was noted in Huarmaca, Hacienda Valles, and Chalaco.

Experts warn that strong to extreme intensity rainfall could continue, particularly in the high-altitude regions of Tumbes and the Piura sierra. These levels far exceed typical October averages, which usually hover around 2 millimeters for the northern coast.
