Extreme weather events in Peru

Overview

In mid October, the Peruvian Navy issued warnings regarding anomalous swells along the central coast, specifically affecting the provinces of Santa, Casma, and Huarmey. Authorities advised fishermen and port operators to take precautions against moderate swells expected between October 15 and October 18.

By late October, weather patterns shifted toward heavy precipitation. The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi) issued a red alert for the northern coast and highlands, warning of intense rainfall through November 1. Meteorologists attributed these conditions to sea temperatures reaching 26 degrees Celsius off the coast of Piura. Significant rainfall was recorded in areas such as Canchaque, which saw 154.9 millimeters of rain, as well as Huarmaca, Hacienda Valles, and Chalaco.
