Chile issues national preventive alert for extreme heat and weather instability

Senapred, Chile’s National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response, has declared a national preventive early warning for extreme heat. This alert is effective from November 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027, covering the entire country from Arica y Parinacota to Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica. The measure aims to strengthen monitoring and coordination via the National System for Disaster Prevention and Response (Sinapred) in response to rising temperatures and more frequent extreme heat events.

Simultaneously, meteorological instability is expected to bring diverse weather phenomena across various regions. The Dirección Meteorológica de Chile (DMC) and Senapred have warned of thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds. Specifically, winds of up to 90 km/h are forecast in the Atacama cordillera, with potential sandstorms in Huasco. In the Biobío region, authorities have issued alerts for electrical storms, rain, and wind gusts reaching 50 km/h, along with the possibility of waterspouts.

In response to these seasonal shifts, the electricity distributor CGE is executing a massive preventive maintenance plan. The company is conducting nearly 100,000 field activities, including inspecting over 87,000 poles and clearing 600 kilometers of vegetation to ensure service continuity and prevent accidents during the summer period.
