Senate President Godswill Akpabio urges unity after Nigerian primary setbacks

Senate President Godswill Akpabio addressed the chamber after a three‑week recess, acknowledging that roughly 40 of the 100 sitting senators failed to secure their parties’ tickets in the recent primaries ahead of the 2027 elections. He praised the democratic process, stating, “I know that there will always be victories and disappointments, yet above every individual triumph stands a greater triumph, the triumph of democracy itself.”

Akpabio said the Senate leadership, including Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, was working to mitigate the impact of the losses and explore ways to help affected senators retain their candidacies. He hinted at behind‑the‑scenes political manoeuvres, adding, “In this Senate, we are promised that we will have very few disappointments.” The remarks sparked speculation about possible negotiations, substitutions, appointments or defections as the chamber prepares for the upcoming election cycle.
