Patrus Ananias poised for Minas Gerais governor race after talks with Lula

Federal deputy Patrus Ananias (PT) has emerged as the leading candidate for the Minas Gerais governorship in the 2026 elections. Party leaders say his name gained momentum after a meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula, which is scheduled for 14 July, to discuss a possible candidacy. Internal PT polling reportedly places Ananias ahead of other contenders, including former mayor Marília Campos, who has opted to run for the Senate, and former senator Rodrigo Pacheco, who declined the offer.

Ananias also intends to present President Lula with a bill that would convert the Federal Center for Technological Education of Minas Gerais (Cefet‑MG) into a Federal Technological University (UTFMG), a proposal recently approved by the Senate and awaiting presidential sanction. While the PT pushes for its own candidate, rival factions back alternative names such as Cleitinho Azevedo, who has not yet confirmed a run.

The outcome of the upcoming Lula‑Ananias discussion will determine whether the deputy will lead the PT ticket for the state’s executive office, shaping the political landscape in Minas Gerais and influencing national electoral dynamics.
