Senator Eduardo Girão Pushes to End Pix Amendments and Slams Senate Inaction

Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo‑CE) said the first half of 2024 was marked by “worst moments” for Brazil’s Senate, criticizing the termination of the INSS parliamentary inquiry, the rejection of the final report of the Organized Crime CPI, and the failure to install a CPI on Master Bank, which he said was blocked by President Davi Alcolumbre despite the backing of 53 senators. He warned the chamber still has a chance to restore its image, urging consideration of an impeachment proceeding against Supreme Court minister Alexandre de Moraes.

In a separate floor speech, Girão demanded support for a constitutional amendment to eliminate the so‑called Pix parliamentary amendments, arguing they weaken oversight and foster clientelism. He also proposed a bill to classify the use of parliamentary funds for concerts and artistic events as an administrative impropriety, citing wasteful spending on shows while hospitals remain under‑funded.
