François Patriat, Macronist Senate leader, dies at 83

François Patriat, a prominent French senator and president of the RDPI group in the Senate, has died at the age of 83. His death follows a serious bicycle accident that occurred on July 17, 2026, in Côte-d'Or.

Patriat was a significant figure in French politics for nearly five decades. Originally a member of the Socialist Party, he served as Secretary of State for Trade and later as Minister of Agriculture under Lionel Jospin. He became one of the earliest and most steadfast supporters of Emmanuel Macron, joining the En Marche movement in 2016 and helping to establish the macronist group in the Senate in 2017.

In addition to his national roles, Patriat was deeply connected to the Bourgogne region, having served as its regional president. Political leaders across the spectrum, including President Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, have paid tribute to him, describing him as a dedicated servant of the Republic and a loyal friend.
