Death of French Senator François Patriat

Overview

On July 17, 2026, 83-year-old French Senator François Patriat was found unconscious beside his bicycle in Pouilly-en-Auxois, Côte-d'Or. He was transported to the CHU of Dijon in serious condition. Authorities launched an investigation to determine if the incident was caused by a medical episode or a traffic accident.

Following several weeks of hospitalization, Patriat died on August 19, 2026, in Dijon. A prominent figure in French politics for nearly five decades, Patriat had served as Secretary of State for Trade and later as Minister of Agriculture under Lionel Jospin. He was also the president of the RDPI group in the Senate and an early, steadfast supporter of Emmanuel Macron, joining the En Marche movement in 2016.

In addition to his national roles, Patriat was deeply connected to the Bourgogne region, where he served as regional president. Following his death, political leaders across the spectrum, including President Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, issued tributes describing him as a “dedicated servant of the Republic and a loyal friend.”
