Senator Hermes Klann Criticizes Brazil's Hip‑Hop School Program

Senator Hermes Klann (PL‑SC) lodged a formal request for information from the Ministry of Education, questioning the National Hip‑Hop School program launched by the ministry. He said the initiative uses elements of hip‑hop culture as a teaching tool but argued that the state should not turn a cultural expression into official education policy.

Klann emphasized that while hip‑hop is a legitimate cultural movement, “Hip‑hop na sociedade tem sua história, seus artistas, seus adeptos, seu espaço legítimo na vida cultural do Brasil… mas transformar essa expressão em política oficial de educação está errado.” He called for schools to set their own pedagogical projects and urged the ministry to focus on improving basic literacy and performance in core subjects, warning that the program’s specific pedagogical approach may conflict with constitutional pluralism of ideas.
