Bolivia: Senator Nilton Condori ordered to six months of preventive detention

Substitute Senator Nilton Condori has been sent to San Pedro prison in La Paz for six months of preventive detention. The judicial decision follows an indictment for alleged terrorism and public incitement to commit a crime.

The investigation stems from a political meeting held on September 26 in Lauca Ñ, Cochabamba, where Condori reportedly made violent statements. Prosecutors allege his rhetoric, which included calls to ‘execute’ certain individuals and ‘extirpate’ an elite, constitutes an exhortation to violence intended to disrupt constitutional order.

The criminal complaint, filed by Deputy Manolo Rojas, also names former President Evo Morales and leaders Román Gutiérrez and Rosario Vargas. While the defense has appealed the decision, citing constitutional protections for elected representatives, the prosecution argues that Condori poses a flight risk and could influence other defendants.

In response to the arrest, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) is evaluating a request from the Alianza Unidad to enable a substitute senator to ensure the department of La Paz maintains political representation in the Senate.
