Bolivian Senator Nilton Condori political shift and arrest

Overview

In late September 2026, suspended substitute Senator Nilton Condori signaled a political shift by aligning with former President Evo Morales during the ‘Evo Pueblo’ national assembly in Cochabamba. Condori, who had previously criticized Morales’s political ambitions, called for the construction of a new societal model, telling Morales, ‘Let’s build another model, brother Evo.’ He criticized the traditional political class and the current administration for stigmatizing social leaders.

By mid-October, Condori was arrested in El Alto on charges of terrorism, criminal association, and public incitement to commit a crime. The legal action stems from a criminal complaint filed by Deputy Manolo Rojas of the Christian Democratic Party (PDC) regarding the September 26 meeting in Lauca Ñ, Cochabamba. Prosecutors allege Condori used violent rhetoric, specifically citing recordings and transcriptions where he discussed ‘executing’ certain individuals and ‘extirpating’ an elite, as well as potential blockades of La Paz. The investigation also names former President Evo Morales and leaders Rosario Vargas and Román Gutiérrez as subjects of interest.

A judge has since ordered six months of preventive detention for Condori at San Pedro prison. While the government and some legislators defend the arrest as a necessary step against impunity and political violence, Condori’s defense has denounced the move as political persecution. Amidst these developments, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) is analyzing a request from the Alianza Unidad to enable a substitute senator to ensure the department of La Paz maintains political representation in the Senate while Condori remains in custody.
