Brazilian Senate manages labor reforms and leadership ambitions

Several key developments are occurring within the Brazilian Senate. Senator Tereza Cristina has expressed her ambition to become the first woman to preside over the Senate, noting that she has discussed potential succession with current President Davi Alcolumbre. She indicated that her political alignment places her closer to Senator Rogério Marinho.

Regarding economic policy, Cristina stated that if Flávio Bolsonaro is elected president, he will face the challenge of balancing agribusiness interests between China, Brazil's largest agricultural buyer, and the United States, a major global market and investor.

In labor legislation, the Senate is preparing an accelerated voting process for a Constitutional Amendment (PEC 221/2019) that aims to end the 6x1 work schedule. If passed, the proposal would transition workers to a regime with two paid days off per week and reduce the maximum weekly workload from 44 to 40 hours.

Additionally, Senator Damares Alves has called for Senate investigations into the conduct of Supreme Court (STF) ministers and requested an inquiry into allegations involving former banker Daniel Vorcaro regarding potential human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
