Senegal: 378 irregular migration candidates detained in Fatick
Senegalese national gendarmerie units conducted three separate operations between October 20 and 22, 2026, in the Fatick region, resulting in the detention of 378 individuals attempting irregular migration by sea.
The first operation, involving the Niodior proximity brigade and drone support, intercepted 47 people. A second operation near the Iranne bolong on Bassoul Island, involving the Fimela territorial brigade and environmental and surveillance detachments, detained 208 individuals. This intervention led to the seizure of three pirogues, three outboard motors, and 5,800 liters of fuel.
A third operation followed an alert from the Gandoul Marine Protected Area regarding a pirogue carrying 21 people. A joint river patrol by the Foundiougne territorial brigade and the National Navy detachment from Djirnda subsequently discovered 102 additional candidates abandoned on an island off Bassoul.
