Senegal begins construction of national gas pipeline network

Senegal has officially commenced the construction of the North Segment of its national natural gas transport network. The project began with the laying of the first pipeline in Gandon, a ceremony presided over by the Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Dr. Abdourahmane Diouf.

The 85-kilometer infrastructure is designed to connect the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas hub to the Gandon power plant. The segment consists of 45 kilometers of offshore pipeline reaching Léona in the Louga region and 40 kilometers of onshore pipeline. It is engineered to transport up to 300 million cubic feet of gas per day.

Minister Diouf stated that the project aims to transform national gas into a lever for development, allowing the country to master, transport, and transform its own resources. The initiative is intended to reduce economic exposure to imported fuels and international market fluctuations while improving the reliability and competitiveness of the electricity supply. However, the Minister noted that any reduction in electricity costs will depend on the efficiency of the entire value chain, including transport costs and power plant performance.
