Senegal communities implement local environmental restoration efforts

In Senegal, local communities are implementing traditional and organized environmental conservation efforts to combat land degradation and climate change impacts.

In the village of Diohine, located in the Fatick region's peanut basin, residents have revitalized the practice of communal fallow, known locally in Serer as ‘Toss’. This collective system rotates land use to allow soil to regenerate, helping to mitigate the effects of agricultural pressure, demographic growth, and declining fertility. This organized rotation manages the balance between farming, grazing, and movement between areas to preserve the productive base of the rural economy.

In the Sédhiou department, communities in Bouno have mobilized for mangrove reforestation to combat coastal erosion and rising sea levels. Supported by the association Green Sédhiou, which provided equipment to local populations, the initiative aims to restore essential ecosystems. This effort follows similar conservation actions previously conducted in the communes of Djirédji and Djibanar.
