Environmental conservation efforts in Senegal
Overview
Local communities in Senegal are employing various environmental conservation and restoration strategies to address land degradation and climate change impacts.
In the Fatick region, residents in the village of Diohine have revitalized ‘Toss’, a traditional communal fallow system used to rotate land use and allow soil to regenerate. Meanwhile, in the Saloum Delta, Dionewar island is experiencing severe coastal erosion that has caused the sea to advance approximately 180 meters toward residential and agricultural zones over the last two decades. This erosion has led to the loss of coconut trees, fruit trees, and mangrove forests, while increasing soil salinization.
To mitigate these effects, communities have implemented defense measures such as installing wooden stakes to retain sand and using concrete to protect local cemeteries. Additionally, reforestation initiatives are underway in the Sédhiou department and the Saloum Delta to restore mangrove forests, which act as natural barriers against Atlantic waves.
