North Africa energy: SoutH2 corridor advances and Senegal electricity plans
In North Africa, significant energy developments are underway. Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Austria, and Germany have signed the Algiers Ministerial Declaration to advance the SoutH2 Corridor. This project aims to transport 4 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually from Algeria to Europe by 2030, utilizing existing pipelines. A dedicated secretariat will be established to coordinate technical and institutional efforts with support from UNIDO.
In Senegal, Energy Minister Abdourahmane Diouf announced an ambitious 400 billion FCFA investment program to achieve universal electricity access by 2029. The plan targets 6,471 localities to reduce territorial inequalities. Diouf also addressed recent 18-day power outages, attributing them to both equipment failures and structural delays in gas infrastructure, noting that the country currently relies on more expensive diesel while waiting for new pipelines and plants like the Gandon facility.
Meanwhile, Tunisia is hosting the International Energy Transition Salon (SITE 2026), focusing on accelerating renewable energy adoption and energy security through innovation and private sector involvement.
