Senegal government launches agricultural support plan for 2026-2027 campaign

The Senegalese government has announced a series of measures to support the 2026-2027 agricultural marketing campaign, focusing on the peanut, rice, and cotton sectors. During an interministerial council led by Prime Minister Ahmadou Alhaminou Mohamed Lô, officials outlined strategies to improve producer incomes and stabilize local markets.

A central component involves the national oilseed company, SONACOS, which aims to collect 250,000 tonnes of peanuts. To achieve this, SONACOS requires approximately 100 billion CFA francs in financing, with a remaining need of 25 billion CFA francs to be secured from the banking pool. The government also plans to settle 44 billion CFA francs in arrears owed to input suppliers.

Other key initiatives include:

• Peanut Sector: Implementing a pilot phase for digital traceability to monitor volumes and payments, and establishing a committee to recommend annual prices that balance producer protection with export competitiveness.

• Rice Sector: Implementing a equalization mechanism linking imports to local rice purchases and ensuring the payment of a 50 CFA franc per kilogram subsidy to rice farmers.

• Stock Management: Diversifying outlets for SONACOS's 70,450 tonnes of peanut cake by selling to livestock feed manufacturers and millers.
